Alabama was the twenty second State added to the Union in 1819. Large cotton farms that used slave labour dominated the early economy together with a large population of poor white subsistence farmers. Following World War II, Alabama developed its manufacturing and service base which lessened its reliance on cotton and generated relative prosperity which continues today.

The capital of Alabama is Montgomery and the largest city is Birmingham with a metro population of a slightly less than one million, which represents 24% of Alabama’s total population. Carl Lewis (Olympic Athlete), Joe Loius (Boxer), Jesse Owens (Olympic Athlete), Condoleezza Rice (Secretary of State) and Lionel Richie (Singer) all came from Alabama.

Alabama is rich in natural wildlife and beautiful scenery including the mountainous regions, the river regions and the Gulf regions. Alabama Tourism promotes the many the States historic features such as the American Indian Culture, life in Confederate American and some of the key locations of the Civil Rights Movement.
